The U.S. Open may be the Super Bowl for tennis fans, but they certainly aren’t wearing foam fingers and face paint to show their support. Open spectators have their own style manual, and the competition in the stands is almost as fierce as it is on the courts, at least when it comes to outfits.
The unofficial dress code for the two-week event is largely influenced by the close relationship (and sharp folds) between tennis and fashion: a classic and preppy model, where a little experimentation is always welcome. Of course, the main focus is (and should be!) on the legendary games and athletes. But with such a star-studded list of attendees (including other professional athletes!), it is impossible to ignore what happens in the stands.
The surge in celebrity appearances at the U.S. Open has coincided with a surge in public interest in the tournament, and this year’s crowd is already poised to break all-time attendance records in 2023. Sure, people who attended the Open long before Honey Deuce hit Instagram might have some idea about the A-List bandwagon, but celebrity spectators can have a real impact on sports viewership and, therefore, competitor support. (Remember what all those Swifties with the Chiefs’ new gear did for NFL ratings last season? Let’s save that energy for athletes who really need a boost!) When stars show up to watch people, especially women, play, they fuel public interest and pave the way for better facilities, paychecks, and more respect for the athletes who deserve it. And it’s a trend we can get behind.
