Converters in the partner test

Many smartphones no longer have headphone jacks. If you want to connect wired headphones, you’ll need a device that converts digital music files to analog signals and can be plugged into a USB-C or Lightning port. Added benefit: These digital-to-analog converters (DACs) can also improve sound and reduce background noise.

Our Belgian partners from Test Achats tested five DACs. For simple needs, Apple’s Lightning to 3.5mm headphone adapter (10 euros) was sufficient. With whom good wired headphones If you want to listen to high-resolution music, you can get better sound with more expensive DACs with built-in amplifiers. They can also be connected to laptops or tablets and improve their sound.

Test Achats names the Fiio KA1-TC for 50 euros as a price hint. It has a permanently installed USB-C cable – for Lightning connections there is the Fiio KA1-LT variant for 10 euros more.

The Ifi Audio Hip Dac 3 (200 euros) is also recommended, but less practical. It does not draw power from the playback device, but from its own battery. The connection cable is replaceable.

Test Achats only recommends the Chord Mojo 2, which costs almost 500 euros and is a bit more complicated, for very demanding users. If in doubt, it is worth listening to it in a specialist hi-fi store.
