Greifswald. A new research building is being built at the University of Greifswald for more than 65 million euros. July 17th is the closing ceremony for the William B. Kannel Center for Community Medicine, which is jointly funded by the federal and state governments.
Workspaces for around 380 people will be created on a floor area of over 6,600 square meters. This makes it possible to have the six departments of the Institute for Community Medicine, Community Dentistry, the central office of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Clinical Cancer Registry and the Greifswald shares of the German Centers for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) and Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) under one roof to merge.
Important research for the model region
In the research building, scientists will, among other things, investigate the increasing frequency of diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases, which are linked to demographic changes. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is considered a model region. “The new research building will lay the scientific foundations for a sustainable and patient-oriented healthcare system of tomorrow,” said Professor Wolfgang Hoffmann, Director General of the Institute for Community Medicine, about the mission of the new center.
“The new building is scheduled for completion by 2026. The client is the State Building and Real Estate Office. The building is named after the American cardiologist and epidemiologist William B. Kannel, best known for his involvement in the Framingham study. (di)
