Notes on ingredients for Old Bay Shrimp
As with any simple recipe, quality comes down to the quality of the ingredients. Luckily for you, this recipe only requires a handful! Here’s what you’ll need:
- Medium Shrimp: Peeled shrimp are best, both with the shell and the tails on. We prefer the tails for the look (just serve with a bowl for the discarded tails). You can use any size, but we prefer medium, which is usually labeled as 41-50. Use either fresh or frozen; we have found fresh shrimp to be slightly better, and if you can, buy wild-caught.
- Old Bay Seasoning: This seasoning mix is easy to find in most American supermarkets. There’s nothing better than the real thing! If you can’t find it, you can make it at home Old Bay Seasoningbut it’s not quite the same thing.
- Olive oil: Olive oil is a healthy cooking oil that adds flavor to shrimp.
- Salt and lemon wedges: Lemon juice enhances the flavors and adds a hint of citrus. It’s not mandatory, but it tastes better with lemon!
What is Old Bay and what does it contain?
Old Bay is an American seasoning blend that is often used to season seafood, often in boiled shrimp and seafood chowders. It was invented in Maryland and is sold by the McCormick brand. It has become quite popular and you will see it in everything from French fries to corn on the cob. The main ingredients in Old Bay are paprika, celery salt, and black pepper, but it is a secret recipe, so no one knows exactly what is in it!
Making it a meal
This Old Bay Shrimp is so simple you can make it in just 10 minutes! With such a quick and easy dinner, it’s nice to have quick and easy sides to pair. Here’s what we recommend:
Storing leftovers
Old Bay Shrimp is best served the same day it is prepared. You can store leftovers for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. However, Alex and I are not big fans of day-after shrimp (just our personal preference), so we have found that it is best consumed within a day or so. You can also turn leftovers into something new, like Shrimp Salad.
