Still, it’s Hudson’s Penny Lane whose name is now being associated with the coat. And the style is quickly becoming one of winter’s biggest fashion trends.

“Penny Lane coats are both stylish and warm, plus they have that cool It-girl factor to them,” says Nichole Sesti, owner of The Niche Shop, a vintage store with two locations in NYC. She attributes the overall rise to “the popularity of shows this year like Daisy Jones and the resurgence and continued interest in ’70s style.”

Vintage pieces come from that decade, or even from the early ’00s, when, Sesti notes, the look had a revival. As for materials, “they really can be made from a wide range of materials, from leathers, suede, with real fur accents to synthetic, poly/acrylic blends,” she explains. “One of my favorites that we had at The Niche Shop—that I actually kept for myself—is a gorgeous camel tan leather with a huge fluffy sherpa collar.”

There are plenty of brand-new styles in stores (see above for our faves), but if you’re looking for an authentic ’70s-era coat, there are amazing vintage resources online. Sesti recommends using eBay, Poshmark, TikTok, and Instagram to discover smaller vendors.

“Gem app brings all online vintage and secondhand into one search and is a great and easy resource to use when online shopping for secondhand,” she explains.

And of course, there are treasure-filled vintage shops in every town—you just have to look. (For the New Yorkers, she recommends NYC Vintage Map, which “does a great job at breaking them down by neighborhood.”)

Happy hunting!
