Hanover – Lower Saxony’s Health Minister Andreas Philippi has spoken out in favour of banning driving after consuming alcohol or cannabis. “The alcohol limit should be lowered to 0.0 when driving,” the SPD politician said. Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung.

From his point of view, a limit value for the intoxicating active ingredient THC of 0.0 nanograms would then be consistent: “Then the situation is clear,” said Philippi. The politician is also in favor of making alcohol and cannabis only available to those over 18.

Following partial legalization, there will soon be new regulations and fines for cannabis while driving. So far, the strict line has been that there are consequences if tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is detected.

A value of 1.0 nanogram has been established in case law. The Federal Council recently passed a law passed by the Bundestag that sets a limit of 3.5 nanograms per milliliter of blood for the intoxicating substance. There are stricter rules for novice drivers and for the mixed consumption of cannabis and alcohol. The new regulations are expected to come into force soon.

The national alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 per thousand. But even at 0.3 per thousand, it becomes critical if a driver shows signs of impairment or causes an accident. The zero alcohol limit already applies to new drivers and drivers under 21. © dpa/aerzteblatt.de
