Some tablets offer the latest technology, such as OLED screens, 5G mobile communications and fast processors, but those that can live without them get a little less high-tech but often a great price-performance ratio. New suppliers are challenging classic brands like Apple and Samsung
Apple and Samsung have been active in the tablet market for years and offer mid-range and high-end models with iPads and Galaxy Tabs. But there are many other brands: US companies such as Amazon, Chinese suppliers such as Honor, Huawei and Lenovo – in recent years companies such as Google, Nokia and Xiaomi and Telekom have also been added.
If you are unsure which operating system best suits your individual needs and what screen size you should have, you can find it in our Buying advice Help. You can also read there why Google services are not working on current Huawei devices and what this means for using the tablets.
Tip: Even before activation, you can see the contents of the table – e.g. all tablets tested and its features such as screen brightness, ports and amount of RAM.

How reliably do providers provide updates?
Tablets should receive regular updates: Updates plug security gaps and renew and expand the software. We asked providers how often they deliver security and function updates. The answers can be found in the product characteristics of the respective device under “Basic data”. This only applies to tablets released since June 2021. We conduct long-term tests to check the reliability of the providers’ updates. new evaluation is available after activation.

This is how we test tablets: rigorous and foolproof comparison
We buy the tablets anonymously and test them comprehensively: functions, handling, display quality, battery life and much more. If a device has a fingerprint sensor for unlocking, it should also prove itself in the wet finger test. And facial recognition should not be missed in the photo.
The results of our tablet test reveal clear differences in quality across many aspects. Here’s how to find the tablet that best suits your needs.
User needs are the focus of tablet testing
We always check from the user’s perspective. For example, instead of relying on the manufacturer’s information about storage space, we check how much storage capacity is actually available. Providers usually focus on the total capacity of the internal storage. However, if a tablet has a total of 32 gigabytes of storage space, you can often only use about 20 gigabytes of your own data because the operating system and pre-installed apps already block several gigabytes.

Tablets optimized for seniors
Some providers offer special tablets for seniors – with a particularly senior-friendly interface and large symbols. Some devices also have useful additional functions and accessories: Emporia Tablet (TAB1_001) contains a stand with charging function (see photo above), which Bea-fon TAB-Pro TL20 has an SOS function with which you can call previously stored relatives using a large symbol.
Test results: All models with senior friendly user interface.
