Buying advice: cordless or floor vacuum cleaner?

Which vacuum cleaner is right for me? In the past, vacuum cleaner purchasing advice mainly revolved around the motor power in watts. Technology has advanced now and high powers no longer play an important role – they are limited to a maximum of 900 watts by the EU Ecodesign Directive.

You should consider the following purchasing criteria:

  • The vacuum cleaner impresses so much with Hard floor as well as in Carpeted floor? Our practical testing shows that not all devices achieve this.
  • How high is it? Energy consumption? Unfortunately, there is still no EU label for vacuum cleaners. In our vacuum cleaner test, we measure and evaluate the energy consumption of each model.
  • Try them handling before you buy. Can the length of the tube be easily adjusted? Are you comfortable with the upholstery nozzles? And the handle should fit the size of your hand. Our tests show: Some handles are quite small, others are thick.
  • THE volume the sucker is very different. Cordless vacuum cleaners in particular can sometimes be quite loud on the highest setting.
  • Dust box or dust bag? Dust boxes are becoming increasingly popular. There is no need to buy new dust bags – and the suction power remains until the dust box is almost full. With dust bags, the suction power decreases noticeably even when they are half full. However, boxes produce more dust when emptied than bags – which is particularly bad for people with dust allergies.
  • When four paws run around the apartment, the question arises: should the vacuum cleaner remove them? Animal hair good? We also check this for each model.

Vacuum cleaners in the test: this is how Stiftung Warentest tests them

In extensive practical laboratory tests, we determine how well vacuum cleaners clean carpets, hard floors and upholstery, how loud they are and how much electricity they consume. In the case of cordless vacuum cleaners, we also check how long the batteries last and whether they lose capacity in the long-term test.

We also examined how hygienically the vacuum cleaners can be emptied and cleaned. And we tested how much of the dust they sucked up is expelled again. We had unpleasant surprises with individual models in this test.
