Bonn – All affected hospitals in Germany must be connected to the new organ donation register by 1 July. The person responsible for organising the register Federal Institute of Pharmaceutical and Medical Products in Bonn assumes that this objective has been largely achieved.
Nearly 90 percent of hospitals are now available upon request, the authority announced today. Most of the remaining hospitals that are not yet available are hospitals without neurosurgery, where potential organ donation is a rare event.
“We assume that the few remaining houses will also promptly implement appropriate measures to comply with this legal obligation,” the official said.
The registry began to work gradually. Since March 18, citizens have been able to submit their declaration for or against organ donation online, using their electronic identity. According to the federal institute, more than 135 thousand people have already registered an organ donation declaration.
Since July 1st, all collecting hospitals have been linked to the organ donation registry. You can now access the statements stored in the registry. In the third stage, until September 2024 at the latest, registration can be accessed through health insurance applications. In the fourth stage, from January 1st, fabric installations will also be linked to the registry.
Registration is voluntary and free of charge; it can be changed or deleted at any time. Politicians and the health system hope that this will provide more clarity on whether citizens are for or against organ donation.
