From 1 May 2025, it will be much easier to change names or surnames. Thanks to the reform of the naming law in the Civil Code (BGB) and the new Self-Determination Act (SBGG), many people can now express their attitude towards life and their family ties through their name. Simply declare your wish at the registry office and change your name for a small fee. However, a name change within the framework of a public law name change will continue to be more complicated and, if in doubt, expensive.
