Our test results show that the economical dishwashers we tested are a particularly smart choice. Although they often cost more than devices with a lower energy efficiency class, they save energy and water. Some models also offer a good combination of low purchase price and low operating costs.

In our 2024 dishwasher test, we have 18 dishwashers verified, including five XXL dishwashers 84 centimeters high. The comparison is worth it: find the most economical and best dishwasher that fits your budget.

The standard width for dishwashers is 60 centimeters. There are 45-centimeter-wide dishwashers for small kitchens. The test field includes both types, including expensive devices from Bosch, Miele and Siemens, as well as cheaper machines from Beko, Constructa and Grundig. The 60-centimeter-wide built-in models achieve better overall scores than the narrow 45-centimeter devices.

Also in the test: XXL dishwashers. These appliances are 84 centimeters high or more – standard dishwashers are usually 80 to 82 centimeters. Tall appliances offer more space for tall dishes such as pizza plates or long-stemmed wine glasses. Our test reveals whether XXL dishwashers from Miele, Bosch or Ikea perform better or worse than standard-height dishwashers.

Tip: We have tested 75 dishwashers since 2020. You can even before activation all dishwashers tested to see.

Dishwasher on test: fully or partially integrated

Fully integrated dishwashers: They are the most commonly purchased. Their control panel is located on the top edge of the appliance door. In the equipped kitchen they are not recognizable as machines. Some fully integrated appliances project the remaining running time or other program details on the floor.

Our predefined filters will help you find your way:

Partially integrated dishwashers: They are built into the fitted kitchen as fully integrated machines and covered by a cabinet front. The control panel can still be seen and thus the programme progress. Partially integrated dishwashers usually cost a little less than fully integrated ones. However, the visible control panel disturbs the uniform appearance of fitted kitchens.

Permanent devices: You can stand freely in the room. The worktop of some of these dishwashers can be removed. They then fit under a continuous work surface. Freestanding devices are often cheaper than built-in devices of the same series. However, their front is not covered. Test results for floor-standing devices

Dishwashers in practical and laboratory tests

Stiftung Warentest tests each dishwasher using several wash cycles in both the Eco and automatic and short programmes: How clean are the plates, cups, glasses and cutlery? How well do the dishes dry? How well does the machine adapt to the amount of dirt and dishes in the automatic programme? How much electricity and water does it use – and how long does it take?

In the handling test, several users also evaluate the ease of use of the machines, how easy it is to add detergent, salt and rinse aid and how useful the baskets are. Last but not least, we determine in the laboratory how quietly the devices operate.

Tip: To get the best results, dishwashers need good results too. Multitabs for dishwasher, Monoguides or dishwasher powder. Still have questions? In the special “Washing dishes – all the information” you get the answers.
