Osnabrück – Federal Minister for Building and Construction Klara Geywitz (SPD) has presented a heat protection strategy to protect cities in particular from the threat of increasing heat. “Climate change and its consequences are particularly visible in our cities in the summer months,” said Geywitz. New Osnabrücker Zeitung.

For the elderly and young children, tropical nights and humid daytime temperatures in record-breaking summers pose a growing health risk. The report suggests, for example, canopies for playgrounds.

The strategy also includes proposed changes to the building code to promote thermal protection and water management and to give municipalities more leeway in implementation. Geywitz said, “And anyone who wants new money from our funding programs has to think about climate adaptation and provide evidence of it.”

Funding is being provided, for example, to free rivers from concrete and bring fresh air back into them, or to excavate and revegecate areas that have been covered in concrete and are rarely used. However, no total amount with which the federal government would like to help cities has been mentioned. © afp/aerzteblatt.de
