Merano/Berlin. Pharmacists expect to save significant time through the integration of the medication plan into the electronic patient record (ePA), scheduled for July 2025.

“On average, it takes 32 minutes for all medications to be recorded in the anamnesis,” said professor Hanna Seidling at the advanced training congress of the Federal Chamber of Pharmacists, according to a statement from ABDA. The pharmacist heads the clinical pharmacy cooperation unit at Heidelberg University Hospital. If the ePA is automatically populated with data from electronic prescriptions written and dispensed from 2025 onwards, this will be a good basis for creating a medication plan. Given that doctors and pharmacists have access, this could significantly reduce the time required.

ABDA also calls for more digital support for medication guidance. Seidling: “Several electronic systems are already in use here today, mainly to detect risks in medicines. The challenge: the multiplicity of warnings that then arise. Algorithms or artificial intelligence (AI) approaches are needed here to reduce the alert burden.” (eb)
