Private video surveillance: when a camera is allowed

It is permitted to monitor your own home and single-family property with a camera. Homeowners can install the camera as a precautionary measure to prevent thieves from breaking in or graffiti. They may also use surveillance to collect evidence if they have already been affected by theft or property damage and think the perpetrator will return.

But owners also have to comply with many regulations, including as landlords. Otherwise, there is a risk of violating the personal rights of their neighbors, for example. This even applies to dummy cameras. Stiftung Warentest explains what to look for.
