“Beautiful teeth” is an individual, patient-dependent aesthetic ideal that must meet the following requirements for a large part of the population:

  • straight rows of teeth with no gaps between the teeth
  • uniform tooth color, as light as possible
  • no visible fillings or discoloration

Those who suffer with the appearance of their teeth can use some of the methods presented here to “improve” the appearance of their teeth.

Bleaching

If your natural tooth color is altered by dyes, you can lighten your tooth color through “whitening.” There are two options to “lighten”

  • 1. at the dentist: In a procedure lasting approximately 2 hours, a whitening agent is first applied to the teeth, which is activated by subsequent radiation. The pigments contained in the tooth substance are destroyed in an oxidation process and the tooth becomes lighter.
  • 2. At home: A plastic tray is “coated” with the bleach at night and placed over the teeth, allowing the agent to take effect at night. After about a week, this procedure is complete and the tooth color becomes lighter.

Possible risks of teeth whitening are complications that can occur if the bleaching agent attacks the gums or oral mucosa, or affects the stomach lining if swallowed.

Veneers

These are thin, translucent bowls made of ceramic or plastic. They are bonded to the tooth and are often used in the incisor area. Here you can cover the discoloration or create or simulate a new tooth shape.

One advantage of veneers is that very little healthy tooth structure is damaged and therefore needs to be ground down. For many patients, veneers are therefore a suitable option for crowning discolorations and broken corners in the visible area of the incisors, without having to sacrifice healthy tooth structure.

Dust jet cleaning

During powder cleaning, a mixture of water, air and salt that does not damage tooth enamel is applied to the tooth at high pressure, which cleans the tooth surface and removes unsightly plaque. This type of plaque removal is part of the biannual prophylactic measures in many dental practices and is much more friendly and effective for teeth than long-term use of so-called whitening toothpastes.

tooth jewelry

A fashion in recent years is the so-called “dazzlers”, which are small precious stones or gold symbols that are glued to the tooth without much effort. Unfortunately, they provide additional niches for tooth decay-causing bacteria that require better dental hygiene. Furthermore, before applying the adhesive, the healthy tooth structure must be conditioned to improve the adhesion of the jewelry and you should be aware that this measure harms the healthy tooth structure, even if not to a large extent.
