Interview with Federal Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach/Jrgen Gebhardt

The Federal Minister for Health of Mainz, Karl Lauterbach (SPD), does not want to make any proposals to abolish the specialized dual track in the short term. The minister emphasized this when asked German medical journal as part of the 128th German Doctor’s Day in Mainz.

We don’t need an ideological fight over double majors, Lauterbach said. The new report from the government commission on modern, needs-based hospital care is important, but many reforms are currently being worked on. The first step is to create more networks of specialists, GPs and hospitals and work across sectors.

The government commission for modern, needs-based hospital care had to abolish the dual specialist track, i.e. the existing structure with resident specialists and hospital specialists proposed last week.
