The latest selection in the Stiftung Warentest test offers results for 24 child seats and baby seats – for all age groups. One of the new baby seats is one of the best we’ve ever tested and narrowly missed out on a Very Good rating. Two others failed.
There are now a total of 211 child car seats in our test database. Many of them passed our crash tests without any serious safety issues. Some, however, failed the crash test or had pollution problems – for which we gave an unsatisfactory rating.

Tested child seats: safe seats for all age groups
Car seats can meet different testing standards: Child seats according to the i-Size standard are marked with UN ECE R129 and classified according to body size. The old UN ECE R44 test seal classifies seats according to children’s weight and can still be found in stores until the end of August 2024. After that, only seats that have the latest i-size standard seal will be able to be sold.

The heart of the car seat test is the Crash Test. We use a sled and test dummies to check how well the seats protect children in the event of a frontal or side impact.
Also our Handling tests are important. A good but incorrectly installed seat offers little protection. Therefore, test subjects check whether car seats are easy to fasten and whether children can be easily buckled up with a seat belt.
Stiftung Warentest also examines child seats and baby seats for harmful substances that little ones may come into contact with. In the laboratory, we look for, among other things, unhealthy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, problematic phthalate plasticizers and banned flame retardants. Most seats are clean.
